How to Clean and Care for Your Picture Frames
Helpful tips for care and maintenance of your frames and protecting your artwork from damage.
Properly caring for your frames ensures they last for years without damaging the photos or artwork inside. Follow these simple steps to keep your frames looking gallery-ready.
Dust Regularly
Use a soft, dry microfiber or lint-free cloth to remove surface dust.
- Tip: For ornate or detailed wood frames, use a soft-bristle brush or a clean cotton swab to reach into grooves.
Clean the Glass (Glazing)
- Standard Glass: Spray a small amount of ammonia-free glass cleaner onto a cloth—never directly onto the frame—to prevent liquid from seeping into the artwork.
- Acrylic (Plexiglass): Use only a specialized acrylic cleaner or a damp, soft cloth with a mild soap. Avoid paper towels and glass cleaners, which can scratch or fog the surface.
Choose the Right Display Location
To prevent fading and warping:
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: UV rays can cause colors to fade over time.
- Manage Humidity: Do not hang valuable frames in bathrooms or near heaters, as moisture can cause mold or cause wood to bow.
- Storage: Store unhung frames vertically and face-to-face to avoid scratches.
Quick Care Checklist (once a year)
- Check hanging hardware to ensure it hasn't loosened.
- Check glazing – Glass is not chipped or cracked. Acrylic has not warped. Glazing is secure in frame.
